day 14

today was the last day on the bike. im really behind schedule so im meeting my uncle in sioux falls today. i wasnt real sure about a good bike route from sioux city to sioux falls so im taking the bus.

rode to the bus station this morning to find that i had to box my bike. i even called greyhound about this and they didnt mention it. so i rode down the street to a bike shop luckily only 6 blocks away. they gave me a box and tools to use. had to disassemble most of my bike to fit it in the box. finally got it all packed up then realized i had to move 25 pounds of equipment...all in seperate bags and a 5' x 3' box down to the bus stop.

i ended up dragging it 3 blocks which was loud and awkward. a nice lady stopped and gave me a ride. what a sweetheart. her husband is a cyclist so she felt for me?

the bus station attendant was so pleased that he didnt charge me the 15 dollar extra luggage fee.

bagoosh.

rode into the rain this morning and that lasted about 30 miles. really cold today. hope i dont get sick. an old man in mondamin where i had lunch told me if the rain is in my face...i should pedal backwards. what a jerk.

rain quit around onawa where i had planned on staying. met a guy who rides in town who said i should just ride the 60 mi into sioux city and stay at this hotel for truckers that is only 25/night.

i decided to do it. did 60 mi in 3.5 hours thanks to flat roads and a back wind. did 85 miles today and am staying in this wierd trucker hotel that looks like a 200 foot long mobile home along highway 29.

wrists hurt from the bumps and my chest is ice cold from the weather. should cross into south dakota tomorrow to head up into sioux falls to meet my uncle harley.

today was intended to be my catch up day. ive got about 125 mi if flat roads. stepped outside and it was chilly. low 50's with a nw wind of 15-25 mph. im heading nw so that made today kinda suck. rode for 3.5 hours and only got 30 mi.

worn out. stopped in missouri valley, ia. a town of 2500 that has their own water park. probably gonna walk to the local theatre and see star trac.

I just got out of the pool at the hotel. I'm rested. I'm hungry. I ask the clerk if there's a good place within walking distance that has food/drinks. She suggests "razzle dazzle" without hesitation. Razzle Dazzle is a strip club. I give her a weird look and she says that the casinos will shuttle me to their business for free! So now im in the hotel lobby on the "business computer" awaiting my shuttle so i can go eat crab legs and play penny slots with the locals.

Only 100 miles of flat terrain until I reach the South Dakota border.

no rain yet, hopefully it doesn't rain on me all day tomorrow. I took a shower with my tent and tarp to clean it off. Its now hanging off the pole. I think I finally got all of the bug guts off from the first night.

Also, I just went to Korean guy's blog - i didn't realize it was in korean. My apologies.

woke up in water. spent the morning draining my tent. everything smells now. a man in the campsite thought i was homeless and offered me a job with the carnival. i declined.

took my new korean counterpart to target for some icy hot then downtown to the bike shop for tubes. i had them fix my spoke so i didnt have to deal with my cassette. the shop had a cat named george that would tear up everything. no one there seemed to care.

outside the shop while saying bye to chowhi there was a loud squeal of a lt blue late 80's rusty mustang backing up down the strret so the driver could yell at some kids that apparently mocked his vehicle.

the 3 kids were shirtless and dirty and yelled at the driver so the guy reaches in his back seat for a weapon to attack the kids only to come barreling out his car with a squeegee.

i laughed. the kids laughed. then the kids called him tokyo drift.

because of even more serious thunderstorms today and my delay from bike repairs im staying another night

rode approx. 50 mi from nebraska city into council bluffs, ia. knocked it out in under 3 hours as i had flat roads and a 10-15 mph wind at my back. first time this trip i was able to use low gears and cruised at 22 mph for over an hour.

had a group of harley guys all give me the peace sign as they passed me today. it felt like a sign of respect but im pretty sure it meant 'nice bike sissy boy'.

council bluffs has gun shot holes in their signs and innappropriate things spray painted everywhere.

so i rode an additional 4 mi in the hilly city of nebraska city to find this campground only to finf that its full and requires a permit. the permit office is 3 mi away!

now im in a hotel. ended up doing 70 mi today and my last hotel room felt like someone was murdered in it. i decided to stay in the fabulous deluxe hotel (free hbo!).

started in falls city. ate lunch in nemaha. ended up in historic brownville where a nice little trail called steamboat trace started. it was so bumpy it kept knocking the panniers off the racks.

got lost. ended up at the entrance to a power plant..had to climb this Massive hill to get into nebraska city. im staying here. did about 60 mi today.

the girls in nebraska are whiney whiners. everywhere i eat they are fighting and complaining. ne chix sux. right?

had a healthy lunch of greasy loose meat sandwich and fries. finally got out of the hill country of missouri only to be in the glacier hills of kansas. ill admit they were far less extreme. i did climb from 750ft to near 1250 ft today.

kansas roads are much smoother. perfect day today. planned on doing 40 mi to white cloud but the town was desolate and the camp ground was next to a fish cleaning station on the river.

crossed into nebraska near white cloud and went an additional 25 mi or so into falls city, ne.

eating at a pizza place bc they said they have french bread pizza.....they do NOT have french bread pizza. what a let down.

change of plans. because of weather and fatigue i was going to take a rest day is higginsville but now im in kansas city! lesley had to check up on her place and i was right off 70 so im resting proper in the city and she'll drop me off tommorow on the trail.

i didnt realize how bad my stuff smelled so ill probably do some laundry. grody.

also i ran over some fresh asphalt yesterday which shot rocks into my rear sprocket breaking my cassette guard and causing my pannier strap to break and wrap arond my sprocket.

so that was fun.

more climbs today. according to my map ive climbed from around 200ft to 750 ft. my legs are cramping a bit. had to stop for the day in higginsville, mo. with the hills and the headwind i only did 35 mi in 4 hours. awful!

today i wore my clean jersey which is lime green. that coupled with the hot pink graphic and neck kerchief on my neck and spaandex....im positive i look like a bicycle queen.

its a good thing my bike is all black.

because of a pending thunderstorm tonight and all day tommorow with chances of tornados ill be taking a short day today and my first rest day tommorow.

i saw absolutley nothing of interest today besides 1000 splattered snakes and turtles.

mexican for the second day in a row. pork tips with pico de galo and cheese sauce. scrumptious.

day 4

boo on day 4.

started around 9:30. had a 5 mi trip into boonsville. today is my last day on the katy trail. i stopped in a pharmacy to get a knee sleeve and the pharmacist gave me bunk directions to hwy 41. it actually lead me 8 mi out of the way to a closed road. so i had to back track 4 miles to a support road that finally lead me to hwy 41.

the katy trail is flat as a pancake. i basically pedalled up extremely sharp inclines all day now that im off of it. that plus the heat plus the detour really slowed me down.

did approx. 40 miles today. ended up in marshall, mo. ill probably be in MO at least 2 more days because of the terrain.

im in a budget motel. its gross and my bed has flowery grandma sheets. i do have cable though so i can watch conan tonight.
